'Wearables' a hot buzzword this holiday

This holiday season, consumers are learning that "wearables" are technology devices, not ugly Christmas sweaters or other apparel.

You know the term has gone mainstream when actress Melissa Joan Hart casually drops it in a Wal Mart (NYSE:WMT) commercial. "Tablets, wearables, cameras, all at Black Friday prices," she says in the Nov. 24 TV ad. In Red Suede Dugueclina 100mm the commercial, she shows off a Fitbit wrist band.

A consumer poll by Pacific Crest Securities out Monday found high interest in wearable devices, including fitness trackers and smartwatches, this holiday season.

Tablet was the top response with 9.9% of respondents, followed by TV at 7.5%. Fitness trackers and smartwatches came in third at 6.2% of respondents, basically tied with smartphones at 6.1%.

The popularity of wearables was the biggest positive surprise of the electronics survey, the Pacific Crest report said.

The big winner among fitness band makers is privately held Fitbit. Among consumers interested in getting a fitness tracker, 58% said Fitbit was the brand they planned to buy this holiday season, Pacific Crest said. Nike (NYSE:NKE) came in a distant second with 13%, followed by Jawbone (11%) and Garmin (NASDAQ:GRMN) (6%).

San Francisco based Fitbit is funded by venture capital firms Foundry Group, True Ventures, SoftTech VC, Qualcomm Ventures, Sapphire Ventures and Softbank Capital. adults (18%) surveyed by Ipsos said they will probably or will definitely purchase a wearable device of some type in the next 12 months. That puts wearables ahead of other popular tech gadgets for intended purchases, including streaming media devices (16%), e readers (15%) and 4K TVs (10%), Ipsos said in a press release Monday.

Video game consoles showed surprising weakness in the Pacific Crest consumer survey. Just 4% of respondents indicated that a console was the top electronics item on their holiday shopping list.

"Consoles (are) not resonating with the mainstream this holiday," the report said. "In the second holiday season for the next gen consoles, consumers are not indicating a high level of interest in consoles."

All told, 91.5% of consumers indicated they don't plan to buy a console this holiday, the firm said. And that's after price cuts and many more games available to play this year. For those who plan to buy a console, Sony's (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation 4 was the leader, followed by Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One and Nintendo's (OTCPK:NTDOY) Wii U.

Of those surveyed, 4% planned to buy a PS4, 2.4% planned to get an Xbox One and 2.1% a Wii U.

While tablets are the top gift item in the survey, the category is losing its luster, Pacific Crest said. Also, Apple 's (NASDAQ:AAPL) market leading iPad is not expected to get a big boost from its new tablets.

"Indicated intent to buy a tablet fell to 16% from 25% in the year ago survey," the report said. "Lower demand for iPad drove five percentage points of this decline, which suggests the recent iPad refresh is not stoking domestic demand. It also suggests the domestic tablet market is commoditizing at the same time as demand declines, which is a bad combination for Apple's tablet growth prospects."

Demand for Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Android based tablets fell less than demand for iPads. Pacific Crest said new buyers of tablets appear to be value oriented and are looking for cheap tablets that can do common tasks such as Web browsing, email and entertainment apps.

We're all going on a summer work

We're all going on a summer work

Dave here with quite possibly the quickest of all the Thursday blogs. The reason for this is simple. We're just about to leave the office here at Radio One HQ in London and journey to the far wild west of England for our summer outing.

Destination Cornwall is the plan with us heading to Truro tonight to do the show from the BBC there in the morning. Then at about lunchtime we journey over to Watergate Bay for our show live from The Boardmasters Festival tomorrow afternoon. We're on air Black Suede Belle Zeppa 100mm from 4pm, but the heat really gets turned up from 6pm with the soundclash between me and Chris. Once we've finished, Cornwall closes, but get there if you can (and only if you have tickets for the Boardmasters Festival!) for what should be the best soundclash in Cornwall ever done by me and him. It's obviously not really a competition, because we don't do those anymore so if you want to say hello you know what to do. Bye.

I hope you win, I had to spend at least 2 minutes of the day registering on here. What a joke.

Popular Wicker Park bar The Fifty/50 is screening episodes of 'Lost' every Wednesday night and offering special Lost themed drinks. Choose from the Flight 815 (a selection of three different shots of Skyy vodka), the Dharma rita (a mysterious margarita beer cocktail) and The Orchid Gray Suede Vicky 120mm (Blue Zephyr English Gin, herb steeped white cranberry, apricot wheat beer and soda).

Will the bar start hurtling back and forth through time like the island? Will you start seeing visions of people you know in different stages of their lives, thereby freaking you out completely? Will some bug eyed guy come find you after you leave and try to get you and your friends to all go back, for the sake of the bar? Will this week's episode completely blow your mind?!?! You'll have to head to Fifty/50 to find out. and the entire lower level is reserved for Losties (who, incidentally, are the only people who will understand anything about this post).

Can't stand the thought of Valentine's Day? Join fellow love haters at Cobra Lounge's Valentine Massacre, featuring a burlesque show with Miss Maya Sinstress and Kendra James (these badass chicks will break your heart literally), a freak show that involves nails driven into body parts, and metal band Skank. So, you know, should be a pretty upbeat night.

The show starts at 9 tonight and there's no cover. If that's not enough, assorted Stoli and Kilo Kai drinks are just $4. At those prices, if you have a significant other, we suggest breaking up with them immediately.

Check out more singles events this weekend here. Sunday at Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia; $12

One of the most exciting live rock bands out there, Monotonix is known for performing on the floor among the crowd, setting instruments on fire and stealing drinks from audience members. When the members found themselves banned from most venues in their hometown Tel Aviv, they decided to take the show on the road. and Europe since 2006, theirs is a concert you experience, not watch. Catch Monotonix's stage antics and Led Zeppelin/Thin Lizzy inspired riffs, as well as opening act Turbo Fruit's Kinks esque neo surf/garage rock for a night your eardrums won't soon forget.

So it's not surprising that some of Chicago's hottest performers have agreed to take the stage as models for tonight's Rock Steady Fashion Show at Moonshine, 1824 W. Division.

The free event, which features designs from local boutiques Bonnie Clyde's, Una Mae's, Process Content and Guise Chic, puts a fashionable twist on the rock Gray Suede Vicky Botta 120mm parties this Wicker Park spot has been hosting since last fall. DJ Dani Deahl, Matt ROAN (of Crossfader Kings) and Jessica Gonyea and Chess Hubbard (of Rocktapussy) are just some of the models who will work it on the catwalk. (RSVP for a hosted Stoli Red Leather Vicky Botta 120mm bar 'til 10:30pm.

Friday Sunday at Flat Iron Arts Building, 1579 N. Milwaukee

On the first Friday of each month, the Wicker Park and Bucktown neighborhoods host an artists' open house. This month, the First Friday event coincides with the Winter smART show. For a suggested $5 donation you can explore the historic Flat Iron Arts Building and view the art of over 100 resident, guest and student artists. Many studios offer refreshments, and impromptu performances will occur throughout the evening. Also look for performances and events at neighborhood venues Debonair, the Double Door and Piece.

Well, thank god for the NSA, because someone finally picked up on our hints. Dre Day has come to Chicago specifically, to Small Bar (2049 W. Division) on Feb. 18. The event, which started in the Twin Cities, includes attractions like the "$20 Sack Pyramid," a "your face on 'The Chronic' album cover" photo booth, 40s galore (while they last) and, of course, tons of Dre tunes spun by local DJs like Pickel, Onceamonth, Intel, Maker, Trew and Kool Hersh. No cover.

All in all, it's a great way to get your Dre fix while you wait patiently for the release of the rapper/producer's new album, "Detox." We hear it's dropping real soon.

Tocco The new buzz word among Chicago pizza (where we're inexplicably always trying to improve upon the already perfect deep dish) is "wood burning oven" as if that's supposed to make the pizza that much better. That said, this place is like Follia (from the same owners) only slightly less, shall we say, wallet heavy.

Wings Around the World The new incarnation of WATW (recently moved from its original Bronzeville location) boasts more than 50 different sauces from nearly a dozen countries, including the Canadian inspired "maple twist." So, I guess we can add that to the list of "Canada's cultural contributions," just above Celine Dion but still well below Slap Shot.

DeLaCosta It's better this way: We never knew if it was one word or three, what to capitalize and whatnot. Yes, we know we're dorks. But we're editors. We worry about these things.

Mangino's Independently owned (and reasonably priced) lunch spots in the Loop are few and far between, and this was one of the better sandwich shops around. So, yeah, take your five dollars and go grab a crappy foot long at Subway. That's exactly what the economy needs.

Check back here every Tuesday with more openings and closings (and snarky comments, of course). And be sure to check out Centerstage Chicago's list of new restaurants and bars.

January has been some unofficial tribute band month in Chicago's clubs. The preposterous posing culminates Friday night in a 1990s tributapalooza at the Abbey Pub, 3420 W. Grace. The bill features the bands Nevermind (a Nirvana tribute) with the Chicago based bands (a Pearl Jam tribute) and (an Alice In Chains Tribute). Friday; tickets $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Also, if you're still on a high from the Metllica shows (or if you missed them), try out this odd twist: Beatallica is part tribute band, part live music mash up, playing the music of the Beatles and Metallica at the same time. Songs include "Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band," "I Want to Choke Your Band" and, our favorite, "And I'm Evil," a campy take on "And I Love Her." Sounds like a trly weird outing for father and son. Saturday at Double Door, 1572 N. Milwaukee; admission is $8.

Self proclaimed "Whiskey Professor" Steve Cole presents a bourbon whiskey training program called Whiskey University next Saturday at Five Star Bar in Ukranian Village. Ten bucks (five for industry folks) gets you two hours with Blue Suede Roche Mule 120mm the prof, learning about the history and heritage of bourbon through tastings of Knob Creek, Baker's and Booker's Bourbons, among others.

Beer aficionados (read: snobs) will want to head out to Bottom Lounge's Dogfloydapalooza tonight to chat with Nick Floyd of Three Floyds Brewery and Dogfish Head owner Sam Calagione. There will be plenty of Dogfish Head and Three Floyds brews on hand, and the Waco Brothers will provide the entertainment.

Unfortunately, in order to get a first taste of Popskull, a new creation from the two renowned brewmasters, you'll have to head out to the Three Floyds brewery in Munster, Ind. on Thursday.

personal shopper shares style secrets

Dunham is making a TV series inspired by her) reveals her closet secrets.

Work keeps me firmly in the present. It important to have someplace you need to be in the morning. Plus, there wholesale nfl jerseys nothing like a dress that doesn arrive on schedule to the apartment of a very important client not habituated to waiting that keeps an 86 year old woman on her toes.

Yet I recognise how my job also ties me to the past. I cannot let Cheap NFL Jerseys CHINA go of the old routines, no matter how outdated or outmoded they may be. For example, I would never dream of going out in public barefaced. I have to put on lipstick and mascara even to travel half a block for a loaf of bread. How do I know I won meet Prince Charming on the way?

The customs ingrained in me are permanent, for good or bad. Although I live alone, I don eat standing over the sink. Buying, chopping and cooking food, on the same Roper with six burners I used ever since first walking into this apartment 60 years ago, gives me fulfilment. Unlike in my mother dotage, when her larder contained only Champagne, coffee cake, coffee and peanut butter, you can walk into my apartment at any time and find plenty to eat for breakfast, lunch, cocktail hour and dinner. My tray is always set with a cloth doily and a napkin, china, silverware. I always felt if I fall into any other habit, everything will take a downward spin.

It the same with my clothing. I get home, undress, brush my clothes, put them on their hangers and give them an airing before they return to the closet which, containing a lifetime of garments, is a Narnian portal to times and places that no longer exist.

My clients often ask for advice on how to get rid of clothing. I always say to keep the

beautiful pieces: embroidered, beaded or one of a Cheap Nike NFL Jerseys kind looks. They are usually sumptuous and feel new when revisited. Treat them like lovely antiques. Often the decision whether to keep a garment hinges on size. Bodies change over the years. If you a size 14, the size 8 in the back of ye olde closet will never make it on the new you. Toss!

My biggest advice for closet cleaning, however, is: do as I say, not as I do. Tossing my own clothing is very hard. Every item seems to have a label attached, and I don mean Dior or Givenchy. Rather, my mother bought it for me, or it was worn with Jim [her partner of 29 years, who died suddenly] on our last New Year Eve together.

I my own worst enemy. I even had trouble bidding adieu to my wedding dress that began a failed marriage and that my mother in law returned to me the day I got back from the mental hospital [Halbreich attempted suicide when her disastrous first Wholesale Nike Jerseys marriage ended]. To let it go, I had to find it a home, which took me years. It had little meaning yet represented something

momentous. What in a dress, anyway, worn for a couple of hours and rarely worn again?

Enough that I spent a year convincing the University of Minnesota Weisman Art Museum, home to a large period clothing collection, to take it.

I can collect because I have the luxury of 12 closets. (Closet space is the one benefit of living alone.) That kind of storage space, which doesn exist any more, is as anachronistically luxurious as the clothes they hold. (But, my god, do I need a Kenzo from my daughter wedding 27 years ago or evening shoes I can get a toe into but are too beautiful to toss?)

Being very compulsive and single, I can arrange, rearrange and do whatever I please.

The closets in my bedroom have shoe doors constructed in the 1950s by a closet shop kind we used for custom hangers, poles to reach high places, custom made moulding

and quilted cotton lining for the shelves, all done in the colour of your choice. My beloved

shoe door that holds about a dozen pairs suspended by the heels leaves the floor bare so dust bunnies do not gather.

The first closet has one long rod where I hang pants, each on its own pant hanger.

Skirts, next, hang the same way. Long ago I found brace dividers that slip over the pole, with each divider holding three blouses, shirts or cardigans, so each garment does not get creased. On this gadget I hang all my shirts by colour: white, coloured, stripes, then prints. Above the rod are two shelves that house handbags. The top holds large bags, baskets or summer leathers. The lower has smaller handbags and clutches with two quilted boxes on either side for out of season

items such as summer T shirts or winter sweaters, depending on what month it is.

All are very easy to reach.

The second closet in the bedroom, which has another shoe door to accommodate the shoes I wear every day, has one shelf in the back that houses absolutely nothing. Imagine that luxury! It is too high to put anything on, and I don need it for storage. This closet holds my dresses. (I wear a lot of dresses if I can find them. If not, I constantly wear my old favourites Geoffrey Beene, Issey Miyake, early Michael Kors.) From a lower rod hang seasonal jackets lightweight summer in the back, a bit heavier cottons in the front. I keep sachets on hangers often to divide: pants, sachet, skirts, sachet, etc. If any of the clients I had admonished over the years for being the child could see my bedroom, they would surely tell the physician to heal herself. For beyond the closets are three dressers, sitting side by side, where the goods inside look as if they about to be sold, so exactly are they placed.

The first dresser is filled with curios: old belt buckles, Mother silk flowers that I often pin on my lapel in the spring, change purses from my grandmother, a fan of black ostrich feathers that was my great grandmother a handmade satin Geoffrey Beene belt.

On to the second dresser, which houses scarves folded and stacked end up, like index cards in a library filing system. The second drawer is lingerie: nightgowns, underpinnings and petticoats from my original trousseau. I tie them in bundles with ribbon and, just like Mother, throw in an empty perfume bottle for good measure. In the bottom drawer are summer pantyhose in bags and turtleneck T shirts in all colours that my adorable household person has given me over the years.

I often wear them under sweaters. Cotton is kind. The third dresser is my playground. The bottom drawer holds the evening bags that are no longer practical for me as a single woman to use without the availability of man pockets to stuff including a very rare minaudi of real gold from Venice that was a 50th birthday present from a mother who wanted me to have the world. I never seen another like it. I can tell you the jewellery I have that lying in gutters and taxicabs, yet there is still enough left over to fill the other two drawers of the dresser.

Clothing is no different from traditions or memories; it a blessing when newer generations take them on happily. I love when children of clients pilfer their mother closet same as I did to my mother wardrobe as a young person.

That a true compliment to taste.

I now have three generations of clients. There are the originals, or what left of them anyway (fitting their walkers and wheelchairs into the dressing room is the hardest part!); their daughters,

whom I knew as children and are now into middle age; and now their granddaughters.

I consider it the best commendation when I win over the 13 year olds, because they my toughest customers. As soon as they enter my dressing room, I know they thinking, way this old lady is going to dress me. failproof method is to first send away the mothers. I send these parents (a completely foreign notion, taught to me by my grandson) flying right out of my dressing room.
